No, it isn’t Nazi coded. Nor “fashy-coded.” Nor any other negative buzzword you so desperately want to label it in an attempt to make yourself feel better. And that’s all they are anymore; buzzwords. They’ve been so overused that they have lost all their meaning.
This has got to be one of the absolute dumbest nontroversies of my lifetime. American Eagle and Sydney Sweeney made a play on words while simultaneously explaining how genetics works.
Everybody gets half their genes from both parents. Half from the father, half from the mother. If both parents are blonde and blue-eyed, like I’m guessing Sydney’s parents were, it’s basically guaranteed that any offspring are going to be blonde-haired and blue-eyed.
Now, with something like Crispr, the idea is that you can have whatever flavor of designer baby you want. I personally would never do that, as I believe that genetics is one of the things that should never be messed with.
But I digress. This ad was innocent, for the most part. At most there is an argument that Sydney was sexualized, but I’d say even that is a bit of a stretch. The only part of it that argument could be made is when she’s laying there with the shirt open and you get a tiny bit of boob revealed.
Is it eugenics? No. That assumes that they are actively stating that everyone who doesn’t have blonde hair, blue eyed, white woman genes is inferior and doesn’t deserve to live. And if that’s what you got from the ad because “muh dogwhistle,” I’ve got some bad news for you.
Them stating that she has great jeans is a play on words. She also has great genes. She’s fit, busty, beautiful, and so far, seems to have a relatively decent personality.
The people who are screaming about this ad wouldn’t have any issue at all if it wasn’t a white woman. That is one of the things that irritates me about this fiasco. And most of them are white as well. There are a handful of black people crying about it, though from what I’ve seen that number seems to be much smaller.
Nobody is getting erased. Nobody is being sidelined. Is there an argument that the ad and Sydney are selfish? Eh, even that’s a bit of a stretch.
Corporations make ads to draw people in and get them to part with their hard earned money. And this one, so far, is working; and likely better than expected. AE’s stock has climbed substantially since the ad released. And the last thing they need to do is backtrack and apologize.
If they capitulate to the woke mob, they are going to be castigated, as the people currently spending money are the ones with extra money to spend. They would be committing corporate suicide. I genuinely hope they double down on what they’ve done, if nothing more than to spite the backlash.
So no. It isn’t eugenics…it’s jeans.
